Our People

A diverse, inclusive university

Northeastern is deeply committed to building a diverse and inclusive community and taking actionable measures to eradicate systemic racism and injustice.

Mills College at Northeastern brings to that mission a long legacy of nurturing academically successful first-generation students, LGBTQ+ students, and Black, Indigenous, and other students of color. Mills College was founded in 1852 as the first U.S. women’s college west of the Rocky Mountains and was the first to enact an admissions policy for transgender students. Today, Mills College at Northeastern serves all genders.

Our historic Mills College merger

Mills College and Northeastern share a common mission: to uplift lives. By joining together to create Mills College at Northeastern, we’re building upon Mills’ legacy of promoting leadership by women and nonbinary people, social justice and equity, and Northeastern’s tradition of experiential learning and use-inspired research.

Faculty and academic leadership are collaborating to develop programming that deepens the Northeastern and Mills connections to the Oakland community and fosters new opportunities for learning, experience, and innovation.
