At Northeastern, we welcome and embrace the diverse talents, abilities, and perspectives of all students while working hard to ensure access to the full Northeastern experience—classes, facilities, programs, and activities.
Disability Access Services
Disability Access Services serves Northeastern students who have documented disabilities as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act as Amended of 2008. Under this definition, a person with a disability is a person with a physical, mental, emotional, or chronic health impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity.
- Our staff members regularly work with students who have a variety of disabilities that require special access or accommodations, including:
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
- Autism spectrum and related disorders
- Chronic and degenerative disorders
- Hearing loss
- Learning disabilities
- Mobility impairments
- Psychiatric disorders
- Traumatic or acquired brain injuries
- Vision impairment
- Pregnancy and parenting
Student Support Services CARE Team
Our CARE Team advocates on behalf of students facing challenges that impact their academic progress and overall wellbeing. We collaborate with campus partners to secure resources and referrals tailored to empower each student to achieve their full potential. Support services include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitating communication with faculty and other staff
- Coordinating support with other campus areas
- Navigating leaves or withdrawal processes
- Exploring various on-campus and off-campus resources
- Promoting resiliency and self-advocacy
Requesting accommodations
Students with a verified disability are eligible to receive accommodations once they have submitted medical documentation that establishes the nature of a disability and/or health condition and describes its impact on the student in the educational environment. If you do not have access to documentation or it is pending, accommodations may be granted on a case-by-case basis and provided provisionally while documentation is pending. Please contact the Office of Student Access and Support Services (SASS) as outlined below.
Testing Center
Northeastern in Oakland offers a testing center that includes proctoring services by appointment for students who have registered with DAS. Registered DAS students can reserve a room through the DAS Portal, which is available in their Student Hub. Room reservations for the Testing Center must be made two full business days in advance.
Students must work with their professors regarding exam accommodations and scheduling to ensure students are meeting all academic requirements.
Service and emotional support animals
Service animals are permitted in campus buildings if they meet the ADA definition of any animal individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. This includes guiding individuals with impaired vision, alerting hearing-impaired individuals to intruders or sounds, providing minimal protection or rescue work, pulling a wheelchair, or retrieving dropped items.
Emotional support animals are not allowed in academic buildings or common spaces such as the library, labs, or dining facilities. Emotional support animals are allowed in student residence hall or apartment rooms with prior registration and approval.
Request an accommodation
- Complete the Northeastern Disability Access Services Student Disclosure Form (PDF).
- Email dasoakland@northeastern.edu stating that you are seeking accommodations and would like to schedule a meeting.
- If you have medical documentation and/or an IEP or 504 Plan, please submit your documentation in advance of your scheduled meeting. Documentation can be sent via email to dasoakland@northeastern.edu or hand delivered to the front desk in Sage Hall, Room 118. If necessary, submit a disability-specific disclosure form to be completed by a clinician; visit the Disability Access Services website for the relevant documentation.
- Once your documentation is received, a staff member will reach out to you to schedule an intake appointment to discuss your accommodation needs.
- If approved for accommodations, a DAS staff member will reach out to you to schedule a Student Service Agreement meeting where they will go over your approved accommodations, denied accommodations (if applicable), and next steps related to your accommodation—such as how to notify your professors or schedule a room reservation with the Testing Center.
- Please note that you will need to re-request your accommodations through the DAS Portal each semester.
If you think that your accommodations need to be updated, please contact DAS and submit updated documentation.
Grievance policy
If you have questions about accommodations or concerns about the accommodations you received, please contact the Disability Access Services Office as soon as possible to have the situation reviewed.
